  • Atheromatous plaque is the element responsible for the disorders caused by a “carotid stenosis.”
  • A normal carotid artery does not contain any atheromatous plaque. Its wall is flexible and without any stenosis.
  • A stenosed carotid artery contains atheromatous plaque that protrudes into the artery and narrows it. This narrowing is called a stenosis.
  • When atheromatous plaque is not extensive, it is not dangerous and should be left in place..
